Short Bio

Questions concerning commercialization and globalization are recurrent themes within Monika Marklinger´s practice. With a point of departure in painting Marklinger intertwines her individual language with the reproducible expressions of society. For her painting is not only understood as a tool for visual comprehension but for contemporary social and environmental studies as well. She seldom works with single artefacts but rather strives to work on long term research-based projects.

Marklinger often lets her pictorial elements create an abundance of contradictory messages in complex collages and highly detailed installations. Another characteristic of her practice is to challenge the boundaries of painting by the written word. The gap between the content of text and picture often reveals new and unexpected meanings.

Marklinger has exhibited in several venues in Sweden and abroad, including Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck, Austria, ISCP, New York and the Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay, India. Represented by Galleri Flach, Stockholm.
